To accomplish this, unions lobby and negotiate on behalf of workers to secure workplace safeguards and benefits that ensure workers are protected and treated fairly on the job. They fight for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Fair compensation.<\/li><li>Paid family leave for all workers.<\/li><li>Reskilling and training opportunities for workers.<\/li><li>Health and safety protections in the workplace.<\/li><li>Pension and retirement benefits.<\/li><li>Workers\u2019 compensation after on-the-job injuries.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The last one \u2014 workers\u2019 compensation \u2014 is especially critical for workers. If they can\u2019t work, they can\u2019t earn money. They are also often at risk of losing their jobs because they are unable to perform their duties after an injury. Unions work to protect an injured worker\u2019s income and job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unions Offer Supplemental Benefits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Workers\u2019 compensation programs only pay a portion of a worker\u2019s wages to them while they are out of work with an injury. That\u2019s why unions offer supplemental benefits to workers who are injured on the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through such funds, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uft.org\/teaching\/new-teachers\/your-benefits-new-members\/uft-welfare-fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Federation of Teachers (UFT)<\/a> Welfare Fund and the <a href=\"https:\/\/mightyunionfunds.org\/disability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Social Service Employees Union (SSEU) Local 371<\/a> Welfare Fund, workers who cannot work due to workplace injury can receive disability benefits to help them with their finances while out of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These welfare funds provide safety nets such as cash stipends, weekly or monthly short-term and long-term disability benefits, and pension benefits in the case of an early retirement due to injury. Collective bargaining agreements often dictate specific workers\u2019 compensation benefits members are entitled to receive if injured on the job. While these benefits may be similar to those provided under state law, they usually include member-specific benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some states, legislation supports unions and management working together to create their own workers\u2019 compensation programs through collective bargaining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, construction industry employers and unions in Minnesota developed the Union Construction Workers\u2019 Compensation Program (UCWCP) that allows injured workers to forgo the state-run system and seek assistance through pre-approved providers. This keeps the focus on \u201crecovery and return to the trade whenever possible,\u201d assert the leaders of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucwcp.com\/Default_ucwcp.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UCWCP<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Focusing on workers\u2019 compensation benefits and programs in negotiations ensures workers have the protection they need should they get hurt at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Union Stewards Assist Injured Workers Post-Accident<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The big question all workers have after they are injured on the job is \u201cwhat next?\u201d. Those that are union members are going to, rightfully, turn to their union stewards to help them navigate the next steps. Union representatives can help injured members by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Arranging immediate medical care after the accident.<\/li><li>Assisting them with filing their workers\u2019 compensation claims.<\/li><li>Informing them about any supplemental benefits and how to apply for them.<\/li><li>Strengthening the member\u2019s case by finding witnesses and collecting evidence.<\/li><li>Holding management accountable to terms set forth in a collective bargaining agreement.<\/li><li>Representing the member\u2019s interests throughout the process.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Such a high level of involvement, assistance, and advocacy ensures workers are treated fairly after an accident and collect all the benefits they\u2019re entitled to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all employers are concerned with their employees\u2019 well-being after an accident. Getting the job done is often a greater priority than protecting workers before and caring for them after an injury. That\u2019s why unions are such staunch advocates for workers\u2019 compensation benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Union leaders understand the obstacles workers face when injured on the job and have the resources to mitigate those challenges by providing supplemental benefits, negotiating workers\u2019 compensation benefits in contracts, and assisting workers after a workplace accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Communication is critical at a time like this.
