{"id":1652,"date":"2019-10-22T06:00:47","date_gmt":"2019-10-22T06:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uniontrack.com\/blog\/?p=1652"},"modified":"2019-10-22T01:43:34","modified_gmt":"2019-10-22T01:43:34","slug":"unions-2020-presidential-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uniontrack.com\/blog\/unions-2020-presidential-election","title":{"rendered":"How Unions Could Shape the 2020 Presidential Election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ken Green<br \/>\nCEO\/Founder<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uniontrack.com\/\">UnionTrack, Inc<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unions are poised to play an important role in a presidential election where \u201cthe stakes couldn\u2019t be higher, not only for the future of the labor movement but for the entire U.S. working class,\u201d say <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/portside.org\/2019-01-31\/labor-movement-2020-election-strategy\">Rand Wilson<\/a>, president of the Center for Labor Education and Research, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/portside.org\/2019-01-31\/labor-movement-2020-election-strategy\">Peter Olney<\/a>, retired organizing director of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU).<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why union endorsement and member votes are so crucial to this election.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Union endorsements and all the support that comes with them have the potential to drive a nominee forward in the 2020 presidential election. \u201cContributions from labor groups continue to play a significant role in elections,\u201d reporter <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/news\/2019\/04\/labor-sector-maintains-political-clout-as-2020-presidential-campaign-heats-up\/\">Camille Erickson<\/a> writes at OpenSecrets.org.<\/p>\n<p>And in a way they haven\u2019t done in decades, the 2020 presidential candidates (namely the Democrats) are chasing the union\/worker voting bloc.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think labor is very important right now for the candidates,\u201d says <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.culinaryunion226.org\/news\/clips\/what-role-will-unions-play-in-the-2020-presidential-election\">Geoconda Arg\u00fcello-Kline<\/a>, secretary-treasurer of the Culinary Workers Union Local 226 in Las Vegas. That\u2019s because these candidates recognize the current administration\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uniontrack.com\/blog\/peter-robb-nlrb\">efforts to weaken unions<\/a> and the opportunity this presents for winning the support of millions of voters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/news\/2019\/08\/19\/democratic-presidential-candidates-2020-dems-iowa-union-voters-caucus-afscme-afl-cio-election-trump\/2007440001\/\">Danny Homan<\/a>, president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Council 61 in Des Moines, Iowa, explains that candidates are trying to capitalize on the power of the working people. They &#8220;understand that this is a large block of folks they want on their side,&#8221; Homan says.<\/p>\n<p>Unions are courting this attention and using it to bring the labor movement to the forefront of candidates\u2019 agendas.<\/p>\n<h2>Unions Are Pushing the Labor Conversation to the Front<\/h2>\n<p>Unions are unapologetically forcing presidential candidates to prioritize a labor-friendly platform.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re setting the bar high \u2014 higher than it\u2019s ever been,\u201d says AFL-CIO President <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/morning-shift\/2019\/08\/22\/what-unions-want-in-2020-472512\">Richard Trumka<\/a>. \u201cIf you want our endorsement, show us that you\u2019re unambiguously pro-worker and pro-union. Tell us about your plan to make it easier to form unions and harder to bust them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/USA\/Politics\/monitor_breakfast\/2019\/0829\/AFL-CIO-Unions-aim-to-roar-in-2020\">Mark Trumbull<\/a> at the Christian Science Monitor reports that labor leaders believe union values such as economic security, inclusiveness and the principle of democracy align with the values of the majority of Americans. The support that workers in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uniontrack.com\/blog\/teacher-strikes-2019\">teaching<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uniontrack.com\/blog\/labor-wins\">media industries<\/a> have been able to garner from the public as they strike and negotiate for better working conditions is a testament to the growing political strength of unions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe union message is a powerful message,\u201d says <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/USA\/Politics\/monitor_breakfast\/2019\/0829\/AFL-CIO-Unions-aim-to-roar-in-2020\">Paul Frymer<\/a>, professor of politics at Princeton University in New Jersey. The union movement overall may have declined over the past few decades, but the working class has not, Frymer says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is why unions are forcing presidential candidates to prioritize labor issues. And why candidates are responding.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uniontrack.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/image1-2.jpg\" alt=\"Group people of fists raised with sunlight; unions and the 2020 presidential election concept\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1655\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uniontrack.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/image1-2.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/uniontrack.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/image1-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uniontrack.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/image1-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/uniontrack.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/image1-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>As a Response, Candidates are Using the \u2018U\u2019 Word<\/h2>\n<p>Candidates saying the word \u201cunion\u201d is a big deal to workers and union members.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/news\/2019\/08\/19\/democratic-presidential-candidates-2020-dems-iowa-union-voters-caucus-afscme-afl-cio-election-trump\/2007440001\/\">Randy Tucker<\/a>, a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 347 in Des Moines, says he expects to hear two things from Democratic candidates vying for his union\u2019s support: &#8220;First, I want someone who&#8217;s not afraid to say the word &#8216;union.\u2019 And, second, I want someone who isn&#8217;t afraid to say the word &#8216;union.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In previous elections, candidates were hesitant to use the word unless they were talking to a union audience. Labor strategist <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/prospect.org\/power\/democratic-presidential-candidates-actually-talking-union\/\">Steve Rosenthal<\/a> notes that during the past 30 years, union activists have often asked, \u201cDid she or he use the \u2018u\u2019 word?\u201d of Democratic presidential candidates. The answer, Rosenthal says, was usually \u201cno.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Candidates this time around have taken notice. Unlike previous elections, where Democratic candidates would walk a tightrope between appearing to support unions and actually putting forth a pro-union platform, the 2020 election\u2019s candidates are proudly expressing their support for unions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think the lesson that Democrats and these candidates particularly have come to understand is unless you talk about the economic issues that affect working people, you are not going to get elected,&#8221; <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/richard-trumka-top-labor-leader-says-2020-democrats-must-consider-union-brokered-health-insurance-plans\/\">Richard Trumka<\/a> said in late August.<\/p>\n<h2>But Unions Aren\u2019t Rushing to Endorse Candidates<\/h2>\n<p>After catching heat for endorsing candidates too soon in the last presidential election, most unions are taking their time to scrutinize candidates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With this many candidates running, working people can afford to be selective with our vote,\u201d says <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/2020-democrats-court-organized-labor-unions-bide-time\/story?id=62938239\">John Weber<\/a>, press secretary for the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO).<\/p>\n<p>Union leaders also want member input before making a choice. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/la-na-pol-presidential-race-labor-unions-20190401-story.html\">Mary Kay Henry<\/a>, president of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), says the SEIU wants to \u201cfigure out a 21st century way to engage as many of our members who want to participate\u201d in that selection process.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uniontrack.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/image2-2.jpg\" alt=\"protest. public demonstration. unions and the 2020 presidential election concept\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1656\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uniontrack.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/image2-2.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/uniontrack.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/image2-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uniontrack.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/image2-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/uniontrack.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/image2-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>How Unions Are Amplifying Members\u2019 Voices\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Los Angeles Times reporter <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/la-na-pol-presidential-race-labor-unions-20190401-story.html\">Evan Halper<\/a> notes that labor leaders are being more cautious about endorsements because they were too quick to jump in with a candidate last time, often without the input of members. \u201cAn effort designed in the last election to galvanize the membership and make a show of force, instead became divisive in several big unions whose leaders backed Hillary Clinton over the more aggressively pro-union insurgent, Sen. Bernie Sanders,\u201d reports Halper.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To avoid repeating the same mistake, some unions have even changed their processes for endorsing candidates to give rank-and-file members more say in which candidate gets a union\u2019s endorsement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example, the Teamsters union is having members fill out surveys to tell leaders what issues matter most to them. The Teamsters will use that information to guide conversations with candidates and share the feedback with members to help them decide whom to support.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got to shape the debate about what this election is about,\u201d Teamsters General President <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/teamster.org\/blog\/2019\/06\/teamsters-seek-member-input-2020-presidential-election\">Jim Hoffa<\/a> said at the union\u2019s political coordinators meeting in 2019. \u201cCandidates are going to come to us and ask for our support. But at this time, I\u2019m not hearing what we should be hearing on the issues.\u201d Hence the need for the surveys to drive those conversations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Unions can afford to hold back their endorsements, as the Democratic field is packed with pro-labor candidates who have to earn the support of unions. \u201cWe aren\u2019t rushing in making a decision this time around because we believe the field is so strong and we want to give people an opportunity to answer questions,\u201d says AFSCME President <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-election-unions\/labor-unions-wield-increased-clout-in-crowded-democratic-2020-race-idUSKBN1QT16T\">Lee Saunders<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what makes the next months leading up to the first Democratic primary so crucial for candidates who seek the support of organized labor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou either chase a race or shape a race,\u201d American Federation of Teachers President <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-election-unions\/labor-unions-wield-increased-clout-in-crowded-democratic-2020-race-idUSKBN1QT16T\">Randi Weingarten<\/a> says. \u201cWe want the candidates to not only hear the aspirations and the values and the needs of our members, we want the candidates to engage with us, not just tell us what they think, but answer the questions of our members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is where technology enters the picture. Union leaders can use a tool like <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uniontrack.com\/\">UnionTrack ENGAGE<\/a> to solicit member feedback about the issues that matter to them and the candidates prefer.
